STEPPING STONES - JINGDEZHEN, JIANGXI

From Fire to Form

3 DAYS 2 NIGHTS | USD 900

4 DAYS 3 NIGHTS | USD 1200

In the hills beyond Jingdezhen, porcelain stone was quarried and kaolin washed; streams powered mills, forests fed kilns, and rivers carried raw materials into a city organized around fire. There, a single vessel passed through dozens of hands—throwing, trimming, painting, glazing, firing, sorting, and packing.

Natural resources, technical ingenuity, and precise coordination were brought together in a porcelain ecosystem that influenced ceramic production and visual culture far beyond China. In 2026, Jingdezhen’s surviving landscape of mines, roads, wharves, workshops, and kilns was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List; its traditional hand porcelain-making techniques are also recognized as part of China’s national intangible cultural heritage.

Over three days, follow porcelain from earth to fire. Read excavated shards at the Imperial Kiln; trace the development of qingbai at Hutian; watch a vessel move between specialist hands; shape a small form and paint in cobalt; then walk from the Gaoling mining landscape toward Dongbu Wharf along the route once taken by porcelain clay.

Encounter the city’s 20th century factory legacy and the makers carrying its knowledge forward. You will leave with an understanding of porcelain not simply as an object, but as a relationship between geology, water, fire, labor, trade, and imagination—and, after firing, with pieces shaped by your own hand.

The historical framing is supported by UNESCO’s page for the Jingdezhen Handicraft Porcelain Industry Sites and China’s official intangible-cultural-heritage record for Jingdezhen hand porcelain-making techniques.
